Today in the Americas, The Communist Party of Panama

Today, 79 years ago, the Communist Party of Panama was founded. It arose among a general outcry across the isthmus in regards to falling wages, increased repression and oligarchic control of every facet of Central American life. The PCP morphed in the 1980s into the People’s Party of Panama (Partido del Pueblo de Panamá). It is still in operation today making it the oldest communist or, even leftist, organization in the region given the turmoils it has had to go through.

Repression in the 1920’s, specifically 1925, created the conditions for movement towards Marxist-Leninist orientation, according to People’s Party leader Ivanor Ruiz in 2007. They began to see Panama as a society dominated by the upper-class planters and the incessant Liberal/Conservative divide.

The Party fought against nazifacismo in Panama, struggled for democratization in education and politically, fought US militarism in Panama in the form of its WWII bases still in Panama in 1946-47, the brawls against the repression of the state in the form of the National Guard in the 1950s, the insurrection of the Canal Zone in the 1960s.

It fought the 1968 coup of Omar Torrijos, who would be the de facto ruler of Panama for the next two decades, and demanded the military to forget bringing back the systems that propped institutions like themselves but to lay down their arms for popular sovereignty and an end to oligarchic rule once and for all. “La respuesta de los militares fue la más
salvaje represión anticomunista!!”

Yet they survived where the PCS and SRI in El Salvador would fail in the early 1930s. Perhaps the key to the PCP’s success was adaptation and its refusal to ally with military means of any kind. It has rejected authoritarian rule in its country and others. It has fought for “justicia social, de unidad, de prosperidad y libertad.” It still adheres to the revolutionary principles of its founding and the hope that they will one day bury this society beneath its feet and move onto a new day.

The enemies have changed – neoliberalism as opposed to militarism – but the means have not and the Communist Party of Panama has a lot of teach others as well as a lot of history to write.

A LA CARGA COMUNISTAS
POR LA UNIDAD DE TODAS LAS FUERZAS DE IZQUIERDA
PARA TRAS NI PARA TOMAR IMPULSO PORQUE NO QUEDA ESPACIO
AVANCEMOS PORQUE LA LUCHA CONTINUA
