Today in Latin America, US Passes Its First Foreign Aid Bill

venezuela-earthquake-buttonToday marks the 197 anniversary of the first US aid bill to Latin America to my knowledge. The bill was addressed to Venezuela following an earthquake – a benign beginning indeed. The aid was given to the pro-independence parts affect by the earthquake and was precipitated in the hopes of a richer economic dialogue between the two nations, which would be be cut short as the War of 1812 began.

The history of US intervention in Latin America is long, and it will be chronicled as we move forward in time. Thus, it is measures like those above that make one remember how much could have been different, had the US provided aid to those in need, instead of other forms of intervention Latin Americans know all too well.
